[Editor's note: Please be sure to extend Books birthday wishes (7/23/12)!]
Scotland, I am happy to report, is still
where we left it this morning.
With just 24 hours to go before we get into Liverpool
(but who’s counting?), all that’s left between the cadets and land is another
watch and another test for Deck cadets.
Engineers can take a few days to rest until after Liverpool, then the
next round starts for them.
To add a little lightheartedness to lengthy study
sessions, I’ve been running a “Jeopardy!”-like trivia game every day by posting
a new question on the common bulletin board in the library. Whenever cadets take a break, or check their
emails, the next best thing is to check today’s question. Most of my questions have been themed around
our ports of call....
1. “In Gibraltar, locals go by what name?”
or
2. “You’ll Never
Walk Alone” is the anthem to which British football club?”
What’s most fun (especially from a librarian’s
perspective!) is that when they don’t readily know they answer, they’ll ask
where to research it. Not only does this
help them answer correctly, but maybe along the way they’ll pick up some relevant information as well.
Their prize, besides obvious bragging rights, is to be
listed on the “Jeopardy! Hall of Fame” white board I keep near the circulation
desk. Checking in to see if the
question’s been answered correctly has even become a regular part of some
cadets’ routines on their way to or from class.
Today we had our first “Double Jeopardy!” showdown, since
Cadets William Kingery and Deirdre Jordan both answered the question correctly
within seconds of each other: “
3. In Liverpudlian legend, the city would fall if
what kind of bird would leave?”
Trust me, it’s not that easy to find this one
out… but these two did with Kingery coming in
first. At this point, “Double Jeopardy!”
went on with
4. “What is the name of the most popular steeplechase, and where is
it held?,” with Jordan eking out just ahead of Kingery. Congrats to all of our trivia buffs!
Just one very special shoutout for tonight, coming from
Cadet Michael Dalter, whose mom is going in for surgery tomorrow; he says
“Wishing you the best on your surgery mom, and a speedy recovery!”
Signing off,
Books
1: answer, “What is llanito?”
2: answer, “What is the Liverpool Football Club?”
3: answer, “What are the liver birds?”
4: answer, “What is the Grand National, and Aintree?”
