Dr. John Rocco is Professor of Humanities at SUNY Maritime College where he teaches a graduate course on Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick in American popular culture and other undergraduate courses.  He is currently writing a book on the Melville brothers and Sailors’ Snug Harbor.

Please join us on March 31, 2016 @ 1500 in the library when Dr. Rocco will be talking about the history of Sailors’ Snug Harbor and its archives in the Stephen B. Luce Library.  He will also be describing Thomas Melville’s governorship of Snug Harbor (1867-1884) and its relationship to Herman Melville’s fiction.   Other topics of discussion will include American whaling, maritime adventure literature, and Herman Melville’s experiences in the South Seas.

All are welcome.  Refreshments and sweets will be served.

Teaching and Learning with Technology Forum: Dr. Robert Kidd

The Stephen B. Luce Library and the Office of Instructional Design present the Teaching and Learning with Technology Forum.

Dr. Robert Kidd from the Engineering Department will be leading a demonstration and instruction on the use of 3D printers to teach design. 

Dr. Kidd’s current research focuses on robotics and autonomous vehicles that can survive in real-world conditions.  He currently teaches the capstone design class for mechanical engineering students here at SUNY Maritime.

Welcome Dr. Mark Meirowitz

“Turkey at a Crossroads in a Turbulent Region”

Dr. Mark Meirowitz is an Assistant Professor of Humanities at SUNY Maritime College.  He holds a doctorate in Political Science and is an attorney.  Mark writes and lectures extensively on Turkish Foreign Policy, US-Turkish relations, Turkish-Israel relations and related matters.  He is also a member of the Advisory Board of the American Turkish Council.

Please join us on November 2, when Dr. Meirowitz will be discussing recent developments in Turkey and the surrounding region, the crisis in Syria, ISIS, the PKK and Russia’s recent incursion in the Syrian quagmire. Turkey is also facing national elections on November 1^st, following the inability of the major parties to form a governing coalition. It is a very fraught time in Turkey, with great uncertainty for the future.

Harris Eisenstadt

Harris Eisenstadt is a drummer, composer and instructor at SUNY Maritime College.  His eclectic resume includes studies with giants in the fields of jazz, improvised music, West African and Cuban drumming.  His performances are equally varied ranging from film and theater to poetry and dance to contemporary classical and opera.

In January 2016, Eisenstadt traveled to Matanzas, Cuba to investigate the story of Sendero/El Almacen, the first record label and artist collective in Matanzas, Cuba.  On March 22, 2016, he will be discussing the details and findings of said trip with the Maritime community.

Please join us in the Stephen B. Luce Library @1500 for what is slated to be a musically/artistically rich and engaging presentation.
