The Mediterranean

Update from the ship's librarian, Laurel:

6/5

After the strong winds and choppy waters of the Atlantic, I’m happy to report that we’ve finally reached the Mediterranean. Now, it’s nothing but calm with Morocco's Atlas mountains appearing starboard, and Spain on our port side, as we cruise through the Strait of Gibraltar.

This is a huge change from yesterday, when we were taking 15-degree rolls, and several cadets had to stretch themselves out on the deck and look out at the horizon. The pitching and rolling was partly due to the wind, which had picked up and didn’t let up until at least midnight or so. Today, everyone is feeling much better and all cadets seem busy hashing out their plans for Italy.

For those interested in following our progress, our port-of-call is La Spezia, in the north of the country and close to Florence, lots of local beaches, castles, and the “five towns” of the Italian Riviera. We arrive there Sunday (June 7th) in the afternoon so we’ll have a nice stretch of time staying there through the 11th. It’s a good thing too, since there is so much to see and do!

Thank you for your recap of activities and reporting. We are following all your reports. We have many friends from the Maritime Academy in Texas on the vessel. Would love to see pictures if that's a possibility.
Thx!
