On March 28, 2014, the Stephen B. Luce Library honored Women's History Month with an engaging lecture by SUNY Maritime's own Professor Julie Wosk. Dr. Wosk is a writer, an artist, and a professor of English, Art History and Studio Painting at SUNY Maritime.
Dr. Wosk used a wide range of artwork, photographs and some film clips to illustrate how women conquered the stereotype of the timid technology user. Images from her two of her books,
Women and the Machine and
Alluring Androids, Robot Women and Electronic Eves were also used to highlight women's attitudes and abilities when it came to mastering machinery. References to Rosie the Riveter, Sally Ride, Grace Hopper among others were featured in this enlightening and at times, thought provoking (Japanese Robots) lecture.
Dr. Wosk's newest book on facsimile females in film, photography and art is expected to be published next year.
