1907 paintings of the ST. MARY'S and NEWPORT now grace the Gove Collection

The library has recently acquired two 1907 paintings by Austrian artist Victor Nickol of the St. Mary's and the Newport, Maritime College's two first training ships.

These paintings were originally owned by Captain Christopher Marsden, an executive officer on both the St. Mary's and Newport.  He passed them onto his grandson, George Marshall who followed his seafaring tradition.  Upon the death of Captain George Marshall in 2012, the paintings were bequeathed to the college per his instructions in honor and memory of his grandfather Christopher Marsden.

These paintings were hung by our facilities department in the Gove lounge area on the main reading floor.  The Gove collection is based on the donations from the family of Robert Gove (class of 1978) who was lost at sea aboard the Poet.  This collection sails with the training ship every year -- so we felt there was no better place in the library to place these two historic paintings.

These paintings are hung in honor and memory of Captain Christopher Marsden.
