Dr. Timothy Lynch Lecture

On April 16, 2015,  the Stephen B. Luce Library Lecture Series welcomed SUNY Maritime's Provost,Timothy Lynch.  Dr. Lynch discussed his latest publication, Beyond the Golden Gate: A Maritime History of California.  He shared with the audience some background history on the events surrounding the conception of the idea for the book.  This included his research methodology, research implementation and some anecdotal teaching stories.  Dr. Lynch then provided the audience with a highly engaging lesson on California's maritime history.

The lecture was followed by an equally informative question and answer session.  Dr. Lynch then stayed to sign many books.  The well attended lecture (standing room only) of the library lecture series was a terrific way to cap of the semester. 

Stephen B. Luce Library welcomes William P. Callahan, Esq.

 

Last Thursday, the Stephen B. Luce Library kicked off its Library Lecture Series for the spring semester with William P. Callahan, Esq.  Mr. Callahan served in active duty and active reserve in the United States Navy (Air Wing) for eight years.  He is currently a practicing attorney at Callahan & Robinson Law Firm where he specializes in government relations and litigation matters including aerial unmanned vehicle (UAS) aka Drones and related matters.

Mr. Callahan lectured on two topics.  His first discussion was on the historical and current issues pertaining to  Piracy in the Gulf of Oman and the Indian Ocean.  It was followed by a lecture that examined the risks of wreck diving to uncover German submarines that sank during WWII. Both lectures were peppered with video footage that helped the audience to gain further insight into the two topics at hand.  The well attended lecture was followed by a spirited question and answer portion.

William P. Callahan, Esq.

William P. Callahan served in active duty and active reserve duty in the United States Navy (Air Wing) for eight years.  He has received specialized training from Naval Air specialty schools in addition to training in aviation electronics countermeasures.  He is currently a practicing attorney at Callahan & Robinson Law Firm.  Mr. Callahan specializes in governmental relations and litigation matters including aerial unmanned vehicles aka Drones and related defense matters.

Prior to his current position, he was a former trial lawyer for the Department of Justice’s Criminal Division and Narcotics Section in New York and Washington D.C.  During his tenure with the Department of Justice, he was assigned as the Regional Counsel to the Drug Enforcement Task force.

In 1980, Mr. Callahan entered into private practice acting primarily as Investigative Counsel to the Bar.  Subsequently, in 2005-2010, he was appointed by the Federal District Court to be the Court’s Independent Investigator.  Since 2012, he has directed his attention and energies toward the legal and defense matters in Drone technology.

On March 12, 2015, he will be sharing his thoughts and insights with our Maritime community on two interesting topics of current events and history.  He will be discussing Piracy in the Gulf of Oman and Indian Ocean, and the Sunken WWII German submarines off the East Coast and scuba diving risks.

The Faculty Scholarship Repository is designed to provide easy access to the wealth of scholarship and professional works created by our faculty and foster increased scholarly communication.

We encourage faculty submissions of all kinds including peer-reviewed publications, commissioned reports, and creative works.

Ship historian Norman Brouwer lectures on the Steamboats of the Long Island Sound

On February 5th, the Stephen B. Luce Library had the honor of welcoming Norman J. Brouwer, one of the leading U.S. maritime historians and lecturers. Brouwer served as curator of the South Street Seaport Museum for 30 years and is currently affiliated with the Mystic Seaport Museum. He shared with us his expertise on the historic steamboats that once plied the waters of the Long Island Sound.

Drawing largely upon materials researched in his book Steamboats on Long Island Sound – Images of America (Arcadia Publishing, 2014), Brouwer’s lecture zeroed in on New York City as an epicenter for shipping lines which often ferried passengers to important ports such as Norwalk and New Haven in Connecticut, Narragansett Bay and Providence on Rhode Island, and beyond. Competition among service lines spurred the construction of increasingly elegant steamboats which greatly improved the ability to travel between New York and coastal New England. Early photographs accompanied his research into the ships’ architecture during the 19th and early 20th century, as well as ship’s plans and colorful illustrations of ship designs.

Luce Library and the rest of the college community would like to thank Brouwer for this interesting lecture, which brought to life the past age of steam, now largely replaced by diesel engines and other components of modern ship design. His full lecture can be seen here.

Stephen B. Luce Library remembers Martin Luther King Jr.

The Stephen B. Luce library is currently showcasing three exhibits detailing the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.  The first exhibit consists of a slideshow.  The second one is a physical exhibit of images collected from the many books on King that are housed at the library.  The third exhibit is of some of the numerous books on the life and notable events of King's life.
